Many Dancing with the Stars fans fumed over “fake heiress” Anna Delvey’s casting for Season 33, but host Julianne Hough is fully on board with the idea.
During her recent appearance on the Call It What It Is podcast, Hough told Grey’s Anatomy stars Jessica Capshaw and Camilla Luddington that the 33-year-old con artist’s casting is “controversial, for sure,” but she’s “so obsessed.”
Delvey — who was the subject of Netflix’s Inventing Anna — still wears an ankle monitor as she’s still under house arrest for defrauding a series of banks, hotels, and individuals out of $275,000.
“Talk about controversy. But, then again, in a way that allows people to show their most true self. This is a great opportunity for her,” Hough continued. “But I just love it so much because I was obsessed with the show.”
She was released on parole in February 2021 and is serving out the remainder of her term on house arrest.
Delvey recieved permission to relocate from New York City to Los Angeles in order to appear on DWTS.
Hough offered some more details about what it was like seeing Delvey on set.
The host even revealed that Delvey’s ankle monitor has been “bedazzled” already.
“She plays into it,” Hough continued. “Whenever she says I have a great outfit on — I’ve seen her two or three times now — I’m like, ‘Oh my gosh.’”
Delvey’s partner Ezra Sosa told Us Weekly that she’s only ever seen Season 30, which aired in 2021.
“[It] is actually super ironic because the only time [Anna] has seen Dancing With the Stars was in jail,” Soza said.
Meanwhile, Delvey revealed that she’s not concerned about dancing with the ankle monitor.
“I mean, it’s fine. It’s just the same as, like, dancing without it, I think,” she said. “It’s pretty light. It’s not that bad.”

Sosa joked that her left leg might get “super buffed” with the extra weight.
Although, he added: “For me, it’d mean a little bit more than that though, because I do love what I do and this show’s been my biggest dream.”
Reflecting on the award, Delvey appeared to find a silver lining in winning, interjecting: “I get to have the ball, I guess?”
According to Sosa, Delvey already has a special place in mind for where she’d put the trophy.
“She said if she won, she’d put it in storage,” he remarked. “But I’ll put mine on the mantle. I’ll make sure it gets some sunlight.”
Revealing why she joined Dancing with the Stars, Delvey also had a blunt answer: “Why not?”
“I used to dance a little bit when I was ages 4 and 12,” she recalled, “but I haven’t really danced in 20 years.”
However, she admitted that her decision to compete on the show was “very last minute” due to the legal requirements surrounding her house arrest.
“They offered it to me, then I had to get permission from ICE to be able to travel out of state and that took about 10 days,” Delvey explained.
“I didn’t really know until very last minute if I was going to able to do it or not, and then it was kind of too late to say no, so, I’m just here.”
